How Emmett Being a #WellnessPet Helps Protect the Planet

12•19•16

We’ve gotten to know each other a bit over the years, but one thing I haven’t been blatant about… until now… is that I’m a fanatical recycler.

If someone in my visual range is about to throw something away, something that I suspect can maybe be recycled in some way, I always ask, “Hey, can’t that be recycled?” Or, “Couldn’t that go in the compost bin?” (Apparently in addition to my fanaticism, I’m also passive aggressive in my recycling efforts…)

Anyway, years ago, I was beyond thrilled to discover that this one particular boxed wine that was actually pretty good had a partnership with upcycle and recycle leader TerraCycle®. So, when we finished a box of wine, we could print a free shipping label and mail it off to be recycled AND to earn points for nonprofits, like schools.

OK. So, what does this have to do with dog food?

Our good friends at Wellness recently partnered with TerraCycle to recycle dog food bags! And there was much rejoicing!

{{May I digress for a moment? For a Twitter chat about Wellness last week, I wondered how long it’s been since we’ve been feeding Wellness. Lightbulb! I could search the blog! I found the oldest mention of Wellness in 2009 when, after exhaustive research, I had decided to make the switch. How fun is that?! And holy moly… how young do Emmett and Lucas look?!}}

Seriously, though, we have tossed so many of those bags over the years, and even though we’d use them first as trash bags to get a longer life out of them, I always wondered why the heck they couldn’t be made of a recyclable material.

Here’s the deal:

Wellness is dedicated to long-term sustainability by embracing and supporting recycling efforts.

TerraCycle enables that by collecting and recycling the material, while allowing you–the recycler–to earn points for donations to your favorite nonprofit. (If your org isn’t listed, they can sign up on the TerraCycle website.)

Learn more about how the recycling program works and how to mail in (for free) your Wellness dog food bags to earn donations! One note: There are drop-off locations around the country, so that’s an option, too, though there isn’t one near us.

Totally the best possible reason to buy Emmett more Wellness from PetSmart, right? Well, maybe not the best… that’s the health and nutrition inherent in their formulas, which you can read about here… but among the best reasons!

My bottom line: Emmett is my best friend. I am committed to feeding him the best, which is why we choose Wellness. The fact that we can now recycle the packaging? That’s the cherry on the dog-food-sundae!

I can take the best possible care care of him while being a good steward to the environment. How can you beat that?

Visit PetSmart® to check out the extensive Wellness lineup in order to pick the right food for your dog. We switch between CORE (as you saw in our last post) and Complete Health (pictured below), which is what Em’s eating today!

I’ve always wished my dogs food bags were recyclable! This is a great move by Wellness. I have been looking more at Wellness due to your posts. What are the main differences between the Core and the Complete Health options?

TOTALLY! I have always hated throwing those bags out with the garbage. This is a huge relief to me!!

The big difference between the two is that Core is super high-protein. Complete Health is a more baseline kibble. Both are available in grain-free options. I think the Complete Health line is a great intro to Wellness because it’s also at a bit of a lower price point!

Both of my girls are on canned food – and Shadow also gets sensitive tummy kibble – but it’s not Wellness. Though next month I will be switching Shadow to the Wellness chicken stew. But I buy all their food from Chewy.

I rarely if ever buy anything at our local PetSmart any more after receiving extremely poor customer service there a few years ago, and again just two days ago.
