You know those commercials for… something… a bank, maybe? And they ask, “What’s in your wallet?” That popped into my head when I was working out the details of this post, and it’s sort of a perfect fit.
What’s in your car?
My car is definitely the dog-mobile. I’m weird about keeping it picked up, like no empty cups in the cup holders, but there are a handful of things that are always, always in my car. Including fur. My car is full of fur. It’s in every little crevice, even the radio knobs. Even when I vacuum. It’s still everywhere.
Fur aside, in my car there’s always: a chew like the hoof in the middle console, a can of sunscreen, a can of squeeze cheese (never leave home without it! I think that’s another credit card commercial…), and a reusable bag for trash. In the armrest, I always, always have a few poop bags, too.
In the back, we’ve always had a dog bed (or two big ones if everybody’s coming along) and a travel water bowl. The dog bed helps Lucas settle for the long car rides to and from Purdue because he’s never really been comfortable in the car, and it’s even harder for him to balance on three legs. With the bed, he can at least nestle a bit even though he would never in a million years fall asleep in the car. (For Emmett, the car = a moving bed. We’re not even out of the driveway and he’s snoring.)
And now!! {{Drumroll}}
The back of the car has a super sweet cargo liner!
We received a sample SUV cargo cover from 4Knines to test out and such perfect timing! We’ve gone to and from Purdue and Indianapolis roughly a million times in the past few months since we’ve had it. Here’s what I can say: It’s super durable. The nonslip liner and headrest straps keep it secure. The bumper cover, once you fold it under after loading in your pup, doesn’t cause it to stop not slipping (does that sentence make any sense?) but protects the bumper especially when we use our Solvit ramp for the big guy.
I didn’t take a pic while it was fresh and shiny and new. Now it’s been filthy–not only the dogs, but we brought a whole bunch of thinned out plants from my parents’ house for our yard and the back was full of dirt and bugs. It’s always covered in dog fur. And, really, you can vacuum it and wipe it down with a cloth, but a good shake has kept it in pretty good shape.
Overall, I’ve been really happy with it, and it’s SO nice to finally cut down on the amount of fur that has moved in and taken up residence in my car. I can now shake out a whole bunch of it after each trip. It’s been pretty darn nice for cutting down on the dirt and mud that seems to always come on their paws, too!
And, thanks to the incredible generosity of 4Knines, one of YOU has the chance to win a cargo liner for your vehicle!

Ooooh! The Kanine Kannon sounds FUN!

Awesome post! Love reviews of products I can actually use. BTW, what type of car do you own?
Maggie
It’s a 2008 Mercury Mariner! Love it!!

i can only imagine what the guys at the car wash think when i take mine in every blue moon. the backseat is end to end dog hair! poop bags in the door. spare water bowl under the front seat… nice to know i’m not the ‘only’ one 🙂
Maggie
HAH! That’s really funny and something I never thought of! (My version of a car wash is, um, parking outside in the rain…)
Erik N.
More stuff than I want to think about! Mostly lazy human stuff like empty soda bottles that get cleared out when I get tired of them rolling around on the floor. Oh, and dog hair of course, lots and lots of dog hair.
Maggie
And then you open the windows and it’s a swirling vortex of lots and lots of dog hair… Or is that just my car?
Erik N.
I keep my windows rolled up and the dog hair safely contained within the vehicle!

well mom has half empty water bottles, ink pens, old mail, and our blankie in the back seat. and dog hair.

Pens!! I always have pens in my car, too, but then when I need it I can never find it. I don’t get it!! 🙂
Jenna
I have not one but TWO carseat liners in the backseat but that can not even begin to control all the black German Shepard Mutt fur…I also always have toys, at least 3 or 4 leashes, doggie carseats for the littles, and extra water!
Maggie
Oh, my gosh. That sounds like a LOT of fur!! I used to keep a leash in my armrest, but I gave it away… You have inspired me to put one back. So useful- you just never know when you’ll need it!
DZ Dogs
OMD I need one of these soo bad! With three pups my poor car is quite a disaster!
Maggie
I feel ya! So hard to keep it clean. Do you get nose smears everywhere? I feel like the back of my car is nothing but dried up drool puddles and nose smears. The liner can’t do anything for the smears, but it can for the puddles!
DZ Dogs
I always have poop bags, gallon of water, collapsible water dish, beach towels (2-3), and some random tennis balls on tops of loads of fur!
Maggie
A gallon of water is SUCH a good idea! I’m always worried about car trouble when I have them with me, especially the long trips to Purdue. I bring a water bottle, but in case of a long wait… Thanks for that inspiration!!
Erin
I always have a seat cover, a blankie, and a spare leash. I kept a Kong or Nylabone when he was a pup, but now (like Em) he sleeps in car rides.

My car..hmmm, dog hair!! I have 4 pups and I’m a groomer…soo, it’s pretty hard to keep hair out of there…I also have doggie seat belts 🙂

In our car? Poop bags definately, water & collapsable bowl, treats, candy for humans, Tums, blankets, towels, bags, sunscreen, eye drops (for people and certain elderly dogs).
Donna Kellogg
we have a Volvo wagon and this would be great for the carpet in the back. For the question we have dog hair in our car
Callie, Shadow, and Ducky's Mom
In my Impala? A hammock-style seat cover for the back seat. Even with the seat belt harnesses, the big girls slide a little on the seat. This way they can’t fall off the seat if the harness breaks and possibly get hurt. And yes, Golden Retriever fur ALL OVER. Other than that, I’m a neat freak. Have the poop bags inside the center console, and everything else in a trunk organizer. Ducky’s crate stays in the house when not in use so it doesn’t “bake” in the car during the summer. A bigger car would be nice, but not feasible.

We have a bed in the back of the car. We can put down the seats to make a larger area for both dogs. I have a bag that I grab for taking the dogs with us in the car that has toys, extra leash, bowl for water, poop bags and treats plus a chew toy.
The cargo cover sounds so awesome. It would help because I would not have to sweep the car out from the dog hair.
Deb
Well the Pittie van is kind of used as a mobile resource center. I keep many of the seats folded and have a dog bed in there, two spare blankets, harness, water bowls, as many spare leashes and collars as I might have on hand in case I come upon someone in need or if we have a naked foster, pet deodorant, baby wipes, extra toys, a copy of the boys vaccination records, treat pouch, clickers, extra carabiners, and bandanas.
Oh, and fur. Lots of fur.

love this!!!

My car is also full of fur. I always have poop bags and treats, too!
Megan
I always carry poop bags with me in the car, just in case! I also have a water bowl in the trunk, doggy seat belts, blankets and towels, and the entire backseat of my sedan is the “dog seat” and is currently covered in a doggy hammock seat protector. I have three dogs also, so I always have my car packed with anything I may need if one or all of the dogs are with me.
Carolsue
We have an old quilt laid down, plus assorted dog toys and treats
DJ
I always carry my dog’s water bowl and a gallon of water, but this would be wonderful to have.
Olivia
Fur, especially on the kids car seats where Charlie likes to sit and look out the window! Loads of stuff that people would say is rubbish but surprisingly comes in handy all the time. Treats and poo bags, but obviously never when they are actually needed!
SkyeHeather
We have a seat cover/hammock, but it’s basically a tarp. This looks soooo much better.
