A while ago, I wrote about Lucas and the sneaky treat.
He still gets it every night, of course, but I’ve started to realize… we have lots of sneaky things around here, little habits and routines to spoil one member of the herd, while the others are oblivious.
Like, when Lucas and Cooper go to doggy daycare on Mondays, Emmett gets to play with his Most Special Toy, his hedgehog. If it’s out when the other two are home, it gets destroyed. So, I have a secret stash of hedgies in my desk drawer that he gets on Mondays.
And every morning, I eat breakfast – nothing special, just Greek yogurt with some granola – at my desk. The herd likes to sleep late, so usually Emmett, Cooper, and Newt are zonked somewhere. Lucas, though, follows me upstairs because he knows that as soon as I take my last bite, he gets clean-up duty!
Cooper doesn’t get many sneaky bits of food because of all his stomach problems, but he has somehow roped us into tucking him in every night. Everyone gets in their regular sleep spot – except Cooper – because he’s waiting for either John or I to get his blanket and wrap it around him.
Newt gets spoiled, too, though she doesn’t seem to appreciate it like these guys do! Since we’re cooking for Cooper now, there’s always a fresh supply of meat in the fridge. We always pop one little piece on top of her wet food at breakfast and dinner, and when we’re baking his salmon, she always gets a small piece of the skin to chew on.
Do you have any sneaky habits or routines with your herd? Have you ever been caught slipping a bite of something to your dog? Or, like these guys, have surreptitious maneuvers become part of your daily routine?
Because Dash has a silly stomach, Lilly does get special treats. But Dash can’t see what she is getting. So we do do some silly things with being quiet and sneaky!!
HAHA! Exactly!! Cooper has no clue about all this behind-his-back treating! Poor Dash and Coop…
Sounds like they are living large!
Your Pals,
Murphy & Stanley
PS – Please look past any weird posts from us as they are currently being stolen from us and posted to an illegal blog.
OH NO. I’m so sorry to hear that. What is wrong with people?!?! I did see the warning at the top of your posts. Have you contacted the guy?? I had that happen once, and I sent a stern email (would be happy to give you the text, if needed) and it was taken down fairly quickly.
Chester’s favorite toy ever is the hedgie! We’ve probably gone through 20 in 12 years. Chester and Gretel get pretty equal treatment but Chester does grump to get covered by blankets. At first we thought it was because he was old and he couldn’t burrow himself anymore…then we realize that he just pegged us for suckers 🙂
HAHA!!! Yep, Jessica. I am the Queen Sucker around here. So cute about Chester and hedgie! He and Emmett can compare notes about fave brands!
That is so sweet that they all have their special TLC routines. I love the picture of Cooper all tucked in for the night. 🙂
He is a cutie (his saving grace) – and I like to think they know how spoiled they are. Although, I’m sure they don’t! 😉
Such a sweet family. Yes, we have sneaky treats too. What I love is the proof of how smart our canine family members can become. I ‘acquired’ a pit bull mix in the last year and she has been a handful. However, with lots of firm discipline, patience, and sneaky treats she is getting smarter and smarter. Did I mention lots of PATIENCE?
Oh, yes. Patience. Not my strong suit, but I’m sure you’re doing great!!
Luke usually gets to lick all plates, etc., because he’s the one that’s always there waiting. But if the girls catch us at it, I have to get up and go give everyone a little treat!
Awww!!! Sweet Luke! What a smart boy!
I love your stories of all the things we pet lovers do that, when admitted, reveal to all how nutty we are about our pets! In our house, the dogs seem to get restless around 8:00 every night, yet we stay up until close to 10. They want to go to bed, but won’t settle down in their area until we also go in. To calm them, we started giving them a little snack around then…kongs filled with cut up carrots and apples and a few kibbles of their food. Once they have something to distract them, they settle down until we all go to bed. Now we have created monsters! Every night at about 7:45, they start begging for their snack. And if we are late, God forbid, the chaos they create for us is insane! Ah, but we love them to pieces, don’t we?
That’s hilarious, Linda! Thank you so much for sharing! Isn’t it funny how well they learn to tell time?!?!
I love these sweet little rituals!
Aw! Thank you, Rebekah! I’m sure you have some routines around your busy house! 🙂
My dog, Ali, always gets clean up duty if she leaves me alone while I eat. She knows how this works so as soon as I have something to eat she goes and lays down, not to far away though 🙂
We haven’t gotten to eat an entire piece of fruit in 2 years. She waits ever so patiently, but her eyes make it clear that she IS waiting for her piece. Apples, pears, blueberries, bananas–but her favorite is summer peaches. (Mine, too. We have a stash that we eat from daily from the beginning of July to the end of August.)
