One night last week, I let the boys out right before bed and thought… “Well, it was bound to turn into this.” See, the whole of December was pleasantly mild for Indiana: temps in the 40s and even 50s! That night felt frigid, and when I checked my phone, it was confirmed. It was 0. There were no degrees. Then, the next morning, I awoke to -4.
That is more like it for this time of year. Not that I like it, of course, but it is what it is!
So, I put a coat on Coop, and he’s had a coat or sweatshirt on for about the last week. It’s easier than taking it on and off every time he has to go out. Plus he’s chilly in the house – I’m chilly in the house – so it helps keep him warm and cozy.
Then, he re-discovered the joy of napping on top of the heating grate!
Emmett is slightly less cold than Cooper, though I still put a coat on him for walks.
Anyway, while Coop and I bundle up and shiver in these low temps, Lucas is having the time of his life! He loves cold weather. Pile snow on top of frigid temps, and the boy is in heaven! I actually tried to get video of him running his laps in the yard – he jumps and twists and spins and leaps, picking up a mouthful of ice at each turn – but I didn’t realize that I couldn’t unlock my phone with gloves on. And I’m not taking my gloves off in -4!
How does your dog do in these frigid temps?
All of our fellow Hoosiers who’ve been complaining about the weather need to bite their tongues as this has really been a mild winter even with last week’s temps, so you won’t hear me complain (much.)
My boys have been bundling up with their jackets and double snoods but they haven’t worn clothes in the house this year. While they have an abundance of bow ties and snoods, I need to develop a better shirt and coat wardrobe for them.
Coats go on in less than 20 degree weather, boots go on if it’s under 10. (We do the Pawz balloon-boots, so that when they get lost in the snow, I don’t feel like I’ve wasted a ton of money.) I get looks of “You have GOT to be kidding me,” the whole time, but she totally hates the cold. If she’s indoors, she’s found at least one if not two blankets to burrow into. And if I’m doing laundry, she can be found IN the pile in winter.
Also, I think I might have a cat. I’ll report back later.
It has to get really cold….like zero or below, before the cold will bother any of our crew. Then Cricket will start to get reluctant to go outside unless she has to. Sheba would like outside on the deck in any temps though!
That’s a good idea to just keep Coop’s coat on, I would do that with Luke except our house can get pretty warm inside when you’re in the same room as the wood stove.
