I’m not sure when or how it started.
But our nightly routine has a comic twist.
Every night, either John or I will say, “Time for bed!” And Emmett and Cooper dash upstairs to their spots in our room. Lucas, though, prefers to sleep downstairs. I suspect he gets too hot – or maybe Emmett’s snoring disturbs him – but he never sleeps upstairs, even though there’s plenty of room for him.
The comic twist comes in, though, after we say, “Time for bed!”
One of us starts walking upstairs, while the other flips off the lights and locks the door.
Whoever has light duty, though, also has to administer The Sneaky Treat (or “the s.t.” if Em and Coop are within earshot).
As soon as he hears “Time for bed” and footsteps heading upstairs, Lucas dashes into the kitchen to collect an illicit treat, a special doling-out that his brothers are completely oblivious to. No matter how hard you resist or try to head up without administering the treat, it’s impossible.
Why?
Because this is Lucas’ Sneaky Treat Face.
Irresistible, right? 🙂
Do you and your dogs have any secrets or sneaky moves like this?
Oh funny!!! We also have a bedtime routine, daddy says “time for bed’ and Maggie and Gussie run into their room and get into their big bed, and I run for the hallway and get up in Momma and Daddy’s bed….sneaky indeed.

Very, very sneaky!! Do you get to stay?? 🙂
YES! I call them “midnight snacks” and it’s usually just Lilly. Dash is the early to bed guy. But Lilly and I stay up watching television or reading. When we go to bed, she gets to have a “midnight snack” and then we go to bed. Of course, it is rarely midnight.. usually 9:00!!
HAH! Same here… Lukey almost always has his sneaky treat by 10 pm. Like Dash, Cooper is totally an early to bed guy!
Could not resist that face!

Sigh. I can’t!
I could not resist that face. No way.
Never! 🙂
Mine are too attuned to the sound of the cookie jar. No matter how far away or how quietly I try to open it – they hear it. But I couldn’t resist that face anyways.
Yeah, if they’re on top of the cookie jar sound, it would be tough to sneak in a treat! Ours is just a little glass vase, so it doesn’t make much of a sound – otherwise, I bet the other two would catch on eventually!
LOL. That would never work here. They both know the sound of the treat cupboard.
Too funny! I bet if these guys were lucky enough to have a whole treat cupboard, I’d never convince them to go up to bed!
That is SO cute! Funny how dogs hear stuff and go into their routines! We often go in our hot tub before bed, and we’ll be sitting there watching TV and the hubs will turn to me and say “Tubbing?” And as soon as Rita hears that, she tears off outside the house! I think she thinks it’s her duty to secure the yard before we head out there. So funny. Will have to try to get a video of it and put it on Pooch Smooches.
YES!!! Please get a video of that. I bet it’s SO funny!
That is so cute. I’ve been using the Glucosamine supplements as Sampson’s last ‘treat.’ I only recently started giving it to Delilah so before I did, I’d have to sneak the ‘treats’ into my room. Delilah is stubborn and her nose knows the treats are in the night stand so she will hang out waiting for me to share the love. LOL I recently started letting Hubby give her the glucosamine too, I figure she’ll be 9 in December so we might as well start building her up.
Smart idea to use a supplement as a treat. Fewer extra calories! We started Emmett on a joint supplement (even though he’s much older than Lucas, he has much better joints/hips) just to be preventative, too. I think it’s a great plan.
This made me laugh out loud! So funny!
Some dogs are just smart and opportunistic, and some are just too darn cute to resist. Based on the photo, and your story, I suspect it is both in your case. 🙂
I have been known to do the same, but it differs with each dog. I think right now Maggie has the advantage. We’re working on desensitization. 🙂
HAHA! With Lucas, it’s absolutely both!
Maggie deserves the advantage, for sure!! 🙂
That face is definitely irresistible. We’re like some of the others above though, you can’t get anything by Luke or Cricket. They know every noise that involves food.
Too darn funny! I guess we’re taking advantage of them a bit by sneaking it by, but… Lukey loves it, and it’s funny! 🙂
I LOVE this sneaky treat idea! I have 4 dogs and yes..one does get some “extras”.
Brutus – a dog I actually rescued off the end of a chain he was on 24/7 has a special place in my heart. He stays by my side no matter where I am (i.e. lays on bathroom floor when i shower.) When the other dogs are outside, he rather hang with me… He always get to clean out the rest of a peanut butter jar and he always gets to “clean up” cats dishes after they eat – my cats eat only a homemade diet & raw meat. Usually my other 3 dogs have no idea…
Awww! That’s very sweet for Brutus, and I bet he appreciates it so much! If Emmett could read and saw the peanut butter jar thing, I think he’d be on your doorstep in no time flat!
Hahaha, taxes! gotta pay your taxes to turn off the light and go to sleep! Love it! My dog Yoda and I I nominated your blog for an award! Check it out at http://yodathepitbull.blogspot.ca/2014/09/yodas-mom-versatile.html and come say hi!
Thank you so much!! That’s so very thoughtful!
Awwwwwww. That is such a hound-y “I’m worried about my ever-decreasing waistline! Won’t you think of my tummy?” face. It’s the forehead ridges. They always crack me up.
YES!!!! So, so funny!!! They’re SO SURE they’re going to starve to death at any moment… at least… they think will without just one more little treat!
Our little mini dachshund Milo has a routine where he likes to squeeze his tennis ball under a dresser close to his food and water bowl and then takes a few bites of food. Once he has chewed up those bites, he proceeds to go back to the dresser and works on getting the tennis ball out from under it. This process is repeated until his bowl is empty! Quite the routine, and this lovely little post reminded me of it 🙂
