You guys, I am so excited about this contest!!
Mars Veterinary contacted me at the end of April about trying out their new dog DNA tests. According to Mars, this new test offers:
- Capability to determine the breed makeup of a mixed breed dog or confirm the breed heritage of a purebred or designer dog.
- Improved accuracy and testing for more than 200 breeds and varieties, covering 100 percent of American Kennel Club registered breeds.
- And better insights for owners to understand their pet’s behavior and create a wellness and health plan fit for their dog’s breed background.
I’ve always been wildly curious as to what breeds made up my Lucas.

He’s a handsome fellow with a unique look, and along the way, we’ve had tons of people tell us that he looks JUST like this or that breed. But none of them ever matched up.
So, Mars offered to send me one to try! (And more to giveaway to you guys!! WAHOO! Keep reading for details…)
You might have seen my Facebook post when their lab in Lincoln received his cheek swab. I couldn’t wait to get the results!
And I got them! And, boy, was I surprised!
Wanna know what they are?
Do ya?
Well, you’re gonna have to wait! Because here’s the deal: Mars so generously offered to give three kits to three lucky readers! Instead of raffling them off, I’m holding a contest.
Here it is:
Guess what breeds make up Lucas’ DNA!
I’ll give you some hints and stats.
First, he’s about 7 years old and hovers at about 75 pounds.
Here’s a full-on pic to give you a sense of his stature:

He was picked up as a stray in North Carolina. (Hey, could be relevant… some breeds are more predominant in certain geographies.)
Health-wise, we’ve dealt with a lot of lumps and bumps, but they’ve all (thankfully) been benign. He has bad hips, and he has a sensitive stomach.
Here’s a facial, and there’s another in the sidebar on the right-hand side:
And here he is sleeping (this probably doesn’t help you any, but it sure is adorable):
And the biggest hint of them all: His results showed that Lucas is made up of 3 different breeds, one of which is predominant. The incredible geneticist I spoke with at Mars said that his results were actually very clear and straightforward. Who would’ve thought?
So! Guess the breed!! You know to guess 3 different breeds (you don’t need to specify which one you think is predominant, but you can if you want). The three closest guesses WIN!
And John just pointed out that there might be multiple winners, so in case of a tie, it’ll be the FIRST three who guessed correctly, so get to guessing!!
Now for the contest rules:
1. One entry per person!
2. To be entered to win, leave a comment on THIS POST ONLY with the breeds you think make up Lucas’ DNA. The three closest guesses win DNA test kits from Mars Veterinary. In the case of a tie, the winners will be the first three correct guesses logged.
3. You must enter with a valid email address. I won’t sell it, spam you, or put it on any list. I’ll use it to contact you if you win.
4. The contest opens NOW and closes next Tuesday, July 16, at which point I’ll share Lucas’ DNA test results along with the names of the winners.
That’s it! Feel free to poke around and look at other pics of him if you need different angles, close ups, and so forth, and you’re also welcome to do Google searches for specific breeds or whatever helps you narrow down your guesses.
I seriously can not wait to share the results with you guys!
Good luck!
German Shepard, lab, black mouth cur (hound)
I think Lucas might be Shephard – Great Dane – Greyhound – Staffie Terrier
I never win anything but here’s my guess anyway!
Mountain Cur/Anatolian Shephard/Yellow Lab
I’d love to get my Charlie tested to see if I’m correct on my guess of her breeds!
Anatolian Shepherd, Labrador, German Shepherd
I’m guessing Anatolian Shepherd, Yellow Labrador & German Shepherd. We had a beautiful, sweet female Anatolian mix, Lucy. She was the funniest, most beautiful and loving dog I’ve ever had. She lived only to please her humans, had the sweetest, gentlest nature, and one of the deepest, most unsettling growls I’ve ever heard. (Sadly, she passed 1 year ago at the age of 9; I’m still getting over it. Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, classic Anatolian mix, and much missed).
What fun. And no, I’m not entering for real because I know all about Honey’s breed.
I’d guess German Shepherd, Labrador Retriever, and Pomeranian (because these wacky tests always have some kind of outlier that no one would ever guess and that’s the least likely I can think of).
Can’t wait to read the big reveal.
labrador, german shepherd and great dane
I would guess: Black Mouth Cur Hound, Anatolian Shepherd and Labrador
Carolina dog, Malnios and Lab
German shepherd, Labrador, Boxer
I’ve been dying to try one of these tests!
I think Lucas has German Shepherd, Belgian Malinois, and Greyhound. 🙂
GSD, Anatolian, whippet
German Shepherd, Labrador Retriever and (this is the hardest one) Carolina dog.
I’m crazy to get a DNA test on Sampson. We know his mom is a Golden, but his dad was a stray black dog. Initially I was told it was a black lab, but she recently told me it could have been a pit. He also has black dots on his tongue which some people say Chow.
Can’t wait to hear what Lucas is made of. 🙂
Some sort of shepherd and lab mix. Not sure about the 3rd breed, maybe some great dane? I can’t wait to hear!
cur, german shepherd, great dane
Lab, grayhound and german shepard:) !! This is super fun!!!
I think…..Lab, grayhound and german shepard:) !! This is super fun!!!
I forgot to leave my e-mail address stone.jodi@ymail.com
Golden retriever, greyhound & great dane
Anatolian, Coonhound, and AmStaff.
I have so many guesses as to what my Toby is – I would LOVE to find out for sure!
german shepherd mastiff, Rhodesian Ridgeback
Belgian Malanois–Rhodesian Ridgeback–and Anatolian Shepherd
whippet, german shepherd, mastiff
Anatolian Shepherd Dog, Blackmouth Cur, German Shepard
German Shepherd (pre-dominantly), Labrador Retriever, and Great Dane.
I doubt I’m right, but don’t enter me anyway, because our dogs are all pure-breds. I just wanted to guess! Can’t wait to find out the results!
Dane, German Shepherd, Yellow Lab
Lab, Shepherd, Pointer
My guess is labrador (for the lumps and bumps), redbone coonhound (for the gorgeous eyes), and German Shephard (for the awesome stance).
Id have to say GSD, Lab, Great Dane
Borzoi, Great Dane, Beagle
German Sheppard, Boxer, Lab
Shepherd, Boxer, Saluki (afghan hound)
Black Mouth Cur, German shepherd and Pit.
We have a 1/8 German Shepherd, 7/8 English Mastiff mix that we adopted (there was an “oops” at a breeder), and his tail and coat look exactly like your Lucas, and he has the dark mask, but he weighs 150lbs 🙂 My guess is shepherd, mastiff, and doberman.
He’s cute!
My 3 are: Black mouth cur, Golden Retriever, Labrador
German Shepherd Dog + Great Dane + Catahoula
Great Dane, Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd
German Shepherd, Borzoi, Corgi
Catahoula
Germ Shepherd
American Staffordshire Terrier
Great Dane, Lab, and Shepherd
Lab, Great Dane, Shepherd
Great Dane, Greyhound, Lab
German Shepherd, Boxer, Rhodesian Ridgeback
Great Dane, German Shepherd and Golden Retriever??
GSD, Carolina dog, yellow lab.
I am thinking Shepherd, Rotti, Dane
German Shepard, boxer, American bulldog
anatolian shepherd, black mouth cur, german shepard
I’m going with
Belgian Mallinois, Carolina dog, and Labrador
As Lucas’s dna makeup.
Labrador retriever, Great Dane and German Shepherd
German Shepherd, Yellow Lab, Greyhound, etc…..
My guesses are German Shepard, Sheltie, and Lab!
German Shepard, Amstaff and Corgi. I don’t think anyone said corgi yet. ..just trying to break away from the pack! Good luck everyone.
I am thinking Great Dane, German Shepherd and Catahoula Leopard Dog with Great Dane predominant!
I’ll guess Rhodesion Ridgeback/Border Collie/Lab. He look a lot like my dog! Very handsome!
Great Dane, Shepard, Carolina Dog
German Shepherd for most prominent, Red bone “coonhound”, boxer are my three best guesses.
I believe he is the following three:
The American Dingo (Also known as The Carolina Dog)
Chinook (for his stunning likeness and what was said of his health)
Anatolian Shepherd
Likely I’m wrong. 🙂 I do know there’s always some wild breed in the mix when you post these things, though. But here is a little excerpt on the Chinook breed for those who aren’t familiar:
“The ideal coloration runs from light honey color to reddish-gold. Black markings on the inside corners of the eyes are preferred. Dark tawny to black markings on the ears and muzzle are preferred. Guard hairs on the tail may be black. No white markings are allowed. Buff markings on the cheeks, muzzle, throat, chest, breeches, toes and underside are acceptable. Eyes are brown to amber in color. Ear carriage is variable, but dropped is preferred and the head more strongly rectangular than other sled-dog breeds. The tail is a well-furred saber and not the usual brush or plume of Arctic breeds. Overall, the Chinook seems to owe more to molosser than to spitz ancestry.”
Bull Mastiff, Shepherd
I’d say, Shepard, Dane and Lab
I’m going with Great Dane, German Shepherd (or perhaps Anatolian), and Lab. I have a Great Dane right now and grew up with a Shephard/Lab mix, and Lucas looks like if you put the two of them put together!
German Shepherd, great Dane, Stafford shire terrier, lab
Weimeraner, Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd
Lucas: Carolina Dog, German Shepherd, and Greyhound
Great Dane Greyhound Saluki Whippet
I think he is black mouth cur, australian cattle dog and german shepard.
German Shepherd, American Bulldog, Corgi
I have a boy who looks much like Lucas, but with longer legs, smoother coat and a natural bobbed tail. His name is Boone. He was adopted out of a kill shelter in Sebring Florida. I believe he is a Black Mouth Cur, but I just sent for a DNA test. My three guesses for Lucas are Black Mouth Cur, German Shepherd and Labrador Retriever. How do we find out the results? I know this was posted in July, and I know you already revealed, but since he looks a lot like my boy, I am VERY curious 🙂 Thank you!
Liz, Upstate NY
Hi, Liz! It turned out, Lucas is a German shepherd, St. Bernard, Boxer! Please let us know what the results are for your pup!
Belgian malinois , Carolina dog , Chinook,
I wish I could show you a picture of my dog. When you have the results… will you let me know what the result is so that I can know what my dog is. I’ll go with Shepard and Short Hair collie but that’s only because that’s what people say about ours. Rufus looks the same but he isn’t as thin.
I see a lot of people think hes a black mouth cur. However that dna test doesnt test for black mouth cur unfortunately. For the full list of breeds they test for go to wisdom panels site.
Is there any way you can tell me what he is I have a female mutt that looks exaexactly like him.like spitting image. I’ve been trying to figure it out for months
I think the contest is over however, I think he is a A&G shepherd &Dingo.
I too have a dog looking like Lucas. She was a ferrel bout year old abandoned ) I had a dna done for a dingo i thought . she was for sure. Ive Had her seven years now. The Dna results came back 6 different breeds (and this us my guess also for Lucas also ) Chow,Borzio, Turavon Sherperd, Boston Terrier,Bulldog,Parson Rat Terrier the least percentage. A mutt supposingly but i will always in my heart believe shes a Carolina Dog. Her name is Hawnee, was Honey but she evolved into Hawnee. Who I love, she’s my girl. Thankyou
German Shepherd, Black Mouth Cur, Great Dane
german shepard and old english bulldog
He looks almost exactly like my Brick – who is Labrador (dam) and Black Mouth Cur,and German Shepherd (sire).
My dog looks like yours what was the DNA result
Black mouth cur and shepard
Black mouth cur, yellow lab, and German shepherd??? Maybe?
I know this post is from a long time ago, but it looks like your dog has black mouth cur in it. Wisdom panel only uses AKC registered breeds in their identities and a black mouth cut is UKC so likely it will not show in your results or may give you results related to a hound.
