I mentioned that I bought a kiddie pool for the boys…
Well, first of all, the small box said it was 8 feet.
I thought that meant circumference. It meant diameter. The thing is huge.

So I set it up last night to see how they would do. I ended up having to climb in and use treats to entice them.

Once Cooper realized Emmett was getting all the treats, he jumped in, too.
Then we tossed some toys in, and the two of them proceeded to jump in and out, shake off, run around, and wrestle while I stood there and got soaked!

Overall, Emmett and Cooper had a lot of fun and got some great exercise.
Meanwhile, Lucas and Cady… hid.
Then tried to escape into the house.

When we were finished for the day, we got everyone dried off, but we didn’t get Cooper’s favorite ball out of the pool…
Do your dogs like to swim? Are they ready to try new things like Emmett and Cooper? Or prone to hiding like Lucas and Cady?
Also, a quick note unrelated to this post: It was pointed out to me recently that my Subscribe button has never worked. Rats! Anyway, (after a very frustrating late night wherein I realized I have less technical knowledge than I had previously thought…) it’s fixed now! If you’re so inclined, you can subscribe via RSS with the nifty button in the top-right corner or via email in the form below the button.
I have always wanted to do the kiddie pool for the dogs but I’m afraid Sadie won’t ever get out of it. She’s just a little water-obsessed.
Looks like fun!
Daisy would be horrified if a pool showed up in her back yard! I’m not sure about Bella. She wouldn’t get in a regular pool when I took her but she loves to wade in the water at the beach/lake.
What’s funny is that there are about 8 more, “In, Out, Wrestle!” pictures. Seemed to be a theme for those two. Cady and Lucas weren’t having ANYTHING to do with that pool. It’s funny because their combined weight is about 160 lbs, but they’re terrified of a kiddie pool!
Sigh… we couldn’t get the video to play for us.
We’ve been wanting to get a pool for Monty, but he recently discovered how to open the back door. We imagine it would go something like “In the pool, out of the pool, in the house, shake on the electronics, bark to go back out, etc…”
Sam
Oh my gosh!!! I can’t believe he figured out how to open the door. That is a huge fear of mine! Does he let himself in and out now??
Even though my dogs love to wade in the creek, all they did with the kiddie pool I bought them was pee on it!
Haa! @Kyla, I was afraid that was going to happen, too! I think they were too thrown off last night to be motivated to pee on it… but I bet it’ll happen!
Way to go Emmett and Cooper! I’m proud of Emmett, who usually is the one to hold back on the fun.
Ann, I think he usually holds back just to hang out with you! 🙂
It’s only this summer that Elka has gone into the creek at our local park. She does so voluntarily and with gusto, but she wasn’t previously interested. I thought about getting a (smaller than yours) kiddie pool, especially with the big heat wave we just had, but it’s been cool enough now that I’m wondering if I should just wait until next year.
Looks like fun!
My yellow lab “Maggie” loves to swim, but my dobie “Jenna” doesn’t want much to do with the water.
We take them to the beach with us every year and this was “Maggie’s” first year since we just adopted her last August. When she saw the ocean, she went nuts! I would like to get her a pool – I think she might like it! Yet, just like Sara said, I’m not sure Maggie would ever get out either!

Hi Maggie,
First of all, let me congratulate you for the great pics. Each one made me smile in its own turn.
I too thought of setting up a kiddie pool in the backyard but instead of spending the big bocks, I decided to try it with a large plastic storage container that’s only about 6 inches deep. You know, the kind that’s used for storing things under beds.
So, I filled it with water, dropped a few doggie toys and let my two little Shih Tzu boys loose in the yard. One of them wouldn’t come close because I suspect that he worries about getting his long blonde hair wet. The other one dive right in, happily pranced all about and when it came time to call it quits he wouldn’t.
So, to answer your question — one of my dogs wouldn’t give it a chance and the other one could probably live in it 24/7.
