We lost an amazing dog this week.
Wookie was one of those dogs who carried a deep and wise soul. When he looked into your eyes, you felt he really understood you. He was handsome and brilliant, and Wookie loved his mama Jeree, one of my best friends in the whole world, with his entire being.
I considered Wookie part of our “extended herd” because he was Emmett’s very first friend. Jeree, who happens to be a phenomenal trainer, helped us through our adoption with Emmett and troubleshooted all of our questions (and there were LOTS in the early days). We’d walk Emmett and Wookie together in the park, and they got along perfectly.
When we adopted Lucas, we experienced his full-force leash aggression on a daily basis. We told Jeree we weren’t ready for him to meet Wookie, but – ever the trainer – she brought him over anyway to help us work with Lucas. Because of Wookie’s unwavering calm and his strong presence, Lucas didn’t even try any nonsense with him at all. If only all dogs were like Wookie, we thought, Lucas wouldn’t have any problems.
Wookie lived a long and happy life. He even became a big brother when Jeree adopted another pup, Kole.
He and Jeree were the best-matched pair you could ever imagine. They were woven together, and their partnership was what inspired me to be the best dog parent that I could be. Wookie was an incredible dog: loyal, sweet, smart, hard-working, and his mama’s best friend and protector.
He is going to be missed by many, many people – I miss him so much already – though I know his memory will live on in every single person who ever met him.
Would you be willing to share a few word of comfort, support, or prayer for Jeree in the comments? I’d like to share as many kind words with her in this terribly difficult time, if only to show she’s not alone.
AW! Rest in peace Wookie!
It is so hard losing a family member that you love.
Jeree,
I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of your best friend, Wookie. It sounds like he was an amazing dog, and his legacy lives on in the dogs and people he’s touched.
I’ll be keeping you in my thoughts!
Wookie was a one of a kind dog, one that I will always be thankful Emmett and Lucas got to meet. He will always be loved and remembered.
Jeree and Wookie were our trainers when we got Lucy. Lucy didn’t have any experience with other dogs, so she was always pretty timid around dogs. Except for Wookie. With other dogs, she would run and hide and always be mindful of where they were and what they were doing. Except for Wookie. If you ever met Wookie, you left thinking, “Now THAT is what a great dog should be like.” We all love our pups and their idiosyncrasies, and I’m sure Wookie had some too, but what Jeree and Wookie were able to do together was nothing short of amazing. Always quick to share his affection and wisdom, Wookie has a special spot in the hearts of the Marton households, both bi-ped and quadri-ped alike.
Dearest Jeree,
I know your heart is missing your special friend. You and Wookie were such a wonderful team. I always thought of him as, “The Perfect Dog”. He will always have a special place in my heart. He will be missed.
Sorry to hear of your loss.
Jeree, my heart is breaking for you! But I know that Wookie’s spirit and “zest for life” lives on through all of the lives – human AND canine – he has touched. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.
xoxo

We had the pleasure of taking a class taught by Jeree and Wookie, and it was the single most important thing we did for our dog. Jeree was a wonderful teacher full of patience and kindness and you could see the love and devotion Wookie had for her. It was beautiful! The kind of relationship every dog owner hopes they will one day have with their dog. He hung on her every word and lived to please. Wookie was the best role model Lucy could have had. Always relaxed, obedient, and kind to all of the dogs, I really believe he taught our scared little Lucy how to relax and enjoy life! It was clear that he treasured the life and companionship that Jeree provided him. He will be missed by anyone who had the pleasure of meeting him!
I’m so sorry for Wookie’s death. He sounds like an amazing dog, and I wish I was lucky enough to have known him. I hope you can remember the really happy memories so that they’ll give you comfort.
So, so sorry to hear this. Wookie sounds like he was an amazing dog. I wish your friend comfort during this time.
We know how hard it is to lose a pet, especially one you have such an amazing bond with. Sending good thoughts to your friend.
Wookie will surely be missed and remembered. Every bits of his memories are very special to all the people who took care of him. And our prayers to Jeree, that she may feel well now in her condition, she’s not going to be alone.
My first dog ever, Floyd (GSD x Golden Retriever), will be turning 9 next month. As he gets older I get a little more scared and a little more sad. Reading about your loss breaks my heart. I wish they could live forever, but their short lives should serve as a reminder to us. Don’t take anything for granted, especially the time spent with loved ones. I wish you and your friend the best during this difficult time.
Sorry to hear of your loss. I understand how it feels; it’s just like losing a family member. Rest in peace Wookie…
