Remember yesterday when I said that if Emmett threw up one more time, he was going straight to the vet?
Well, he threw up eight times. Eight. He felt awful. For the first time in nearly five years, he chose to stay in his bed and not eat his dinner. So we went straight to the vet.
Who wasn’t there! 🙁 We did see a fill-in vet, thank goodness. She checked him out, got him on some anti-nausea meds and sub-cutaneous fluids (he was dehydrated), and took some blood. She sent us home with instructions to keep him calm (not really a big stretch since he was barely moving anyway).
As a quick aside: Has your dog ever gotten “sub-cu” fluids? Oh my goodness. I have never seen anything like it. When she said, “He’ll be out in five minutes, he’s just getting lumpy,” I just thought she was weird. But, no. The fluids actually form big lumpy pockets across his back. I couldn’t decide if it was funny or sad. I’m still not sure.
She called an hour ago to say that his blood work had some worrisome results. One of his liver enzymes was twice normal levels, and another enzyme was a couple points too high. We’re on our way back to the vet, thankfully to see his regular vet who we adore. I’ll post an update once we learn more.
Sigh.
Hugs to you guys…
Hugs to Emmett! I hope they can fix him up good as new.
Shamus had sub-cu fluids once. He was severely dehydrated after bolting through the woods with his escaped co-hort, [our] Emmett. We feared bloat when he wouldn’t stop coughing but he turned out okay. As for the lumpies, we never saw any under all his fur. Thankfully, all we saw was a re-energized dog. I hope the same for you and John.
Sending big hugs and all kinds of positive energy your way.
Oh no, I’m so sorry. Sending good thoughts to you. Please do keep us updated!
ruh roh…hopefully your betterinarian does his job and make you all BETTER!

We give Sub-cu fluids pretty frequently, but to cats. Kidney disease is common in cats and when it advances they can need fluids weekly or even daily. We had a great cat that we administered fluids to for well over a year. But, it does form a big lump and it looks really weird. Sometimes it seemed like the lump was the biggest part on Tigger.
Oh, Maggie, I’m so sorry Emmett is so sick. It’s the worst feeling in the world because they can’t talk to you and tell you what’s going on. We’re hoping that your vet is able to help him get back up and around soon. Please keep us updated and big hugs to you and the boys.

I hope the vet has something to fix him quickly. What an awful feeling not knowing what to do. We’re thinking of you!
Oh no! I’m so sorry to hear Emmett is not feeling well. Sending lots of love and good energy his way!
Yikes, that’s frightening. I hope everything turns out okay and Emmett recovers. Take care.
Poor Emmett – I hope they figure out what is wrong with him soon and fix him up quick! Sub-q fluids can be pretty weird-looking; a boxer pup I know sported some pretty floppy “fluid boobs” for a while when he was battling diarrhea. I’ll be keeping you guys in my thoughts.
