Do you have a nickname for your dog?

05•20•10

*Note: Big things are happening on the Campaign to End BSL! I will give a full update tomorrow, but in the meantime, please continue to create and send in those postcards! We have a long way to go, but I’m entirely confident we’ll get there. Check out some of the ones already submitted on the Facebook page. And don’t forget the official hashtag is #endBSL.

This has been a busy, wonderful week, both with the End BSL Campaign and with work. I’m very lucky that I get to work from home. But throughout this crazy week, I realized I spend a lot of my day having conversations with my boys. (“What do you guys think? Time to take a lunch break?” or “Let me finish this article then we’ll go for a walk!” or “What do you guys think of this sentence…”)

And yesterday it hit me: Unless we’re actually training, I almost never call them Emmett and Lucas. I have a whole bunch of nicknames for the both of them.

Emmett: E-man, Em, Piggy-Doggy

Lucas: Lukey, Lukey-bear, Smoochy, Smoocherelli

Combined: boyos, men, faces (As in, “Hi, faces!” No idea how that evolved.)

Is that weird? Do you have nicknames for your dogs? I’d love to hear them!

I love it! I hardly ever call my dogs by their real names! My boy is Duncan, but I call him Peanut, Babes, Sweet Boy, Love Bug, Peanut Butter and Jellies, Bug in a Rug. My girl is Heidi, but I call her Heidi Monster, Spaz, Food Monger, Sweet Girl, Crazy Dog….. Duncan is a Lab/Pit Bull mix and Heidi is a Weimaraner (that’s why we call her Spaz).

Thanks for a fun blog. I am going to put you on my blogroll.

I think the main nick names I have for my dogs are those we devised to use when talking ABOUT them, so their names didn’t become a white noise to them by being used in conversation.

Their names are used only when directly addressing the dogs.

Jasmine’s nick name is Munchking and J.D.’s Monster (guess why? LOL)

Jasmine is usually directly addressed as Jazzie, J.D. remain resistant to change.

    Their common name is Guys.

    Lucy, The Beagle:
    1) Bea-goo
    2) Beag-a-doo
    3) Monkey
    4) Monk-a-doo
    5) Pickle
    6) S—head

The last one is reserved for late night barking, excessive begging, eating tissues/napkins, and playing keep-away with my socks.

    Finnegan, the Irish Wolfhound:
    Finn, Finnegans, Puppy, Puddles.
Puddles makes complete sense if you realize he has a beard, which he dips in his water when he drinks, then walks around dripping all over the house, and in your lap…

I got my beautiful mutt from the local animal shelter. After a few days I decided to name her “Jump” because she became very affectionate and could jump so frigging high! My nieces often refer to her as “Jumpy” or “Jumpster” when they are playing fetch with her.
