I recently had the opportunity to check out this darling little book, Dog Food for Thought: Pet Food Label Art, Wit & Wisdom by Warren Dotz and Masud Husain.
Here’s the full description from Insight Editions:
Dog Food for Thought: Pet Food Label Art, Wit & Wisdom (Insight Editions / $12.00 / April 2014), by Warren Dotz and Masud Husain, is a one-of-a-kind gallery showcasing the colorful label art, bold logotypes, and witty slogans characteristic of product art during the golden age of advertising. From the authors of the award-winning books Meet Mr. Product and Ad Boy, this quirky collection offers woof-worthy words of wisdom and clever quotes from recognized names in pop culture, alongside rare and exceptional commercial artwork from long-time collector Dotz’s extensive archives. The perfect book for designers, dog lovers, and pop culture fanatics alike, Dog Food for Thought reminds us exactly why we call canines “man’s best friend.”
I adore vintage advertising. I think nothing gives us a better glimpse at what our culture was like a specific point in time better than the ads. And the ones collected in this book? There are some gems!
The book is a collection of dog food labels and advertisements from the 1950s to 1970s. The images are all paired with a saying, proverb, or witticism about dogs on the facing page. For example, one of my faves:
We have become so hyper-aware of the ingredients and contents of the pet food we purchase. These ads illustrate that that wasn’t always the case! Many of them are “meat flavored” or “beef and beef by-products” – and there are tons of labels that say that you can feed the dog food to your cat, too.
And who knows what was in this particular product? Though the ad is adorable!
Many of the quotes that accompany the ads are old favorites sprinkled with a few unfamiliar ones.
This is one of those books that will be a great conversation piece – set it on a side table, flip through, and laugh. At $12 for a hardcover, it’s not a bad deal, either.
And, now, thanks to the generosity of the folks at Insight Editions, two of you have a chance to win a copy of Dog Food for Thought.
