Currently, the campaign to end BSL is focused on Denver. I chose Denver for two reasons: First, their ban has been in place on and off since 1989, and since that time have killed thousands of “pit-bull like” dogs. Now that their mayor, who has previously upheld the ban, is running for governor, it’s crucial to get his attention on this issue. Second, BlogPaws is being held in Denver in September, and with hundreds of pet bloggers pouring their money into the city, I thought we needed to be a voice for these animals.
But it’s important to remember that this is a national issue. Do you know if your city has any type of breed ban or restriction in place? I follow the news of dog bites, breed bans, city council meetings, etc. and wanted to share a few recent stories with you:
New dangerous dog ordinance before Toledo City Council: This is an excellent story. The council considers repealing their breed-specific laws for ones that hold owners responsible.
“If we can make owners more responsible by levying fines against those who are not and cut down on the number of dog bites in City of Toledo, then I think we’re doing our job,” said Council Member Rob Kudeman. “That’s what people expect council and the administration to do.”
Public’s turn to howl over pit bulls: This one really gets me. The proposed ordinance in Lynn, MA defines pit bulls as: “dangerous animals” with “powerful instincts for dominance” and “unyielding aggressiveness.” If passed, the ordinance will require pit bull owners to leash and possibly muzzle their dogs when out in public. It seems to make more sense to require all dog owners to have all dogs leashed when out in public. Why make these things breed specific?
Police chief sees to reason for dog breed ban: Here’s an instance where a resident is concerned that his neighbors’ rottie and pit bull *might* get out of their fence and *might* bite, even though he admits that the dogs haven’t caused any problems.
And to end on a happy note, Rescued Pit Bull Defies Deformity Through Therapy Work: This is an absolutely darling story that shows the resilience and people-loving nature of a very handsome boy!
If you haven’t made your postcard yet, now’s the time to do it! The BlogPaws deadline is quickly approaching (September 12), so please share the campaign across your networks!
Have you seen any recent stories in the news about pit bulls? Please share them in the comments!

WOW!!! Maggie You’ve done it !!! national coverage.!! The Pitties are finally getting their day in spotlight…
Wow the ignorance continues to show with all these law makers, all so wrapped up in policies and procedures. Stating the bully breed be ban to protect the public, which the public is to blame for the label of dangerous breed being placed on this animal. If you’d educate those wanting to own any breed of dog, and actually have requirements to be met prior to owning, as well as hand down stricter punishments for those who indanger, harm or adandon animals as well as even acts of wrongly teachings. Nip it in the butt in the beginning. It’s so easy to wipe it under the rug and destroy a breed excitence and ability to strive due to being valued less importance to what a new coffee shop or yet another low income housing unit. Rehilibate those ignorent to responsiblities of having a pet, just as one would exspect with a child. If you start in the beginning a better chance for positive outcome is likely rather then as in children waiting til it’s to late and the life of crime is seen more pleasing, a dog is taught as a child, lessons in life create a well rounded and inteligent adult. This breed was tagged as a killer and made to grow into a killing machine due to again human error an ignorance. Instead of making the survival even harder and more of a challenge help produce learning and prevention, do not label all as that of one who did wrong, our minds never forget the lil bite of the mail man who entered your yard unannounced rather never remember the toddler dragged by it’s diaper from the side of the pool by that same wicked jaws of a killer. Who were in the rubble locating survivors in the attackes. Protects us from dangers sensed weather government trained or family trained. An accident in the home can be just as deadly as it is in war. There senses are stronger and warning is a normal reaction of fear.
Get your heads outta your ass law makers and those who feel qualifed to label the whole breed as bad, you must be the expert and able to predict if a race will riot on the street cause a fellow memeber of the race acted out in anger, so i assume they’ll all become irrate and a danger to society.
Guess what, the guard will be bringin in the dogs. How else will fight society’s failures of education and guidence to all the delinquents heading for already crowded prisons or on welfare our taxes already are drained to pay. But lets destroy and ban a dog casue we’re ignorant and unable to accept fault for any failures.
