Dogs definitely know when they are helping, and I think they love it. Especially high energy dogs that need a "job."

Getting patted is nice too, but its just the icing :)

That's a great example. It's amazing how dogs just "know."

I'm not sure what they know, but dogs, therapy and many others, just seem to know something.

When I was walking through the park once a little boy fell off his bike. He started to cry and before his dad could get to him my dog, Kayloo, walked over to him and was just... near him. Normally she would have slopped all over the kid, but it was like she knew he was upset and should just be there with him.

I love dogs :)

First thing, please put a disclaimer up when you post stories like this. I can't be wailing like girl with a skinned knee while I'm at work.

Emmett is so much more than a dog, let alone a therapy dog. You pup is a miracle, plain and simple. In his mind, he helps EVERYONE when he lets them pet him.

Absolutely dogs know how to approach a situation when it comes to other people's temperment. Lucy is a little leary of kids, but when she saw a 4 year old who was timid around dogs, but just HAD to pet her, Lucy sat very calmly and let the little girl gently pat her head.

So yes, our dogs know, and I'm not entirely sure we're worthy of their love and devotion. They are far superior to us at times like those.

Now, when it comes to counter-surfing and sock-stealing, not so much...
